Maude Adams (1872-1953) was the first actress to play Peter Pan on Broadway in 1905. At the peak of her popularity, she was the highest-paid performer of her day. Beyond her acting career, she was an innovator in stage lighting, fiercely private, and later served as the head of the drama department at Stephens College in Missouri.
