Gould and Lincoln, 1859. Leather bound hardcover of First Impressions of England and Its People by Hugh Miller.

The Christian Scottish geologist Hugh Miller (1802–1856) was one of the most influential figures in Victorian science and religious thought, despite his limited formal education. Miller became an expert on the Devonian rock formations of Scotland, especially its fossilized fish. In the era before Darwin's Origin of the Species, Miller argued that evidence from geology pointed to intelligent design.
