Harry Emerson Fosdick (1878–1969) was a Protestant minister and a leading voice for liberal Christianity in the early 20th century. He opposed fundamentalism, emphasized personal experience, social justice, and encouraged Christians to adapt their faith to modern knowledge and culture.

On Being Fit is a first edition. Living Under Tension has pencil markings and marginal notes from its previous owner, Rev. D.R. Hedgley, the 7th pastor of First Baptist Church of Winston-Salem (1944-1975). Several of these volumes are from Hedgley's library.
