Algonquin Books of Chapel Hill, 1989. Signed first edition, first printing hardcover with dust jacket of Dirty Work by Larry Brown.
Larry brown has signed and inscribed the half-title page to the book's previous owner Charles Loftin.
Also includes a photocopied 3-page typewritten letter Larry wrote to his reviewer for the Carolina Quarterly in appreciation for a recent article. Larry announces that he is getting progressively drunker as he writes and bemoans the worsening condition of his typewriter. He ultimately resumes his letter on the following day noting that his kids are coming home from school soon.
There is an additional piece of correspondence to the book's previous owner from someone named Hawkins that may or may not refer to the Larry Brown letter. It is difficult to conclude on that account. Hawkins also mentions a pig farm shoot and a sow giving birth. Maybe weirder than the Larry Brown letter albeit not as historically interesting.
Mr. Charles Loftin (1936-2020) was a lifelong resident of Davidson County. He was a teacher and artist. His estate's distinguished library championed his study of the Civil War, Southern artists and architecture, and the local history of Davidson County. Many of his books include personal correspondence with the authors, deepening his perspective of their material.
Good condition. Lots of spotting to the page block edges and minor spotting to the first few pages. Previous owner's name in pencil to the front free end paper top corner. A solid book with spotting.
