William Hone (1780-1842) was a prominent English writer, satirist, bookseller, and publisher, known for his radical views and his significant contributions to the fight for press freedom in Britain. Hone famously defended himself in three separate trials in December 1817. His brilliant defense, arguing for a journalist's right to free expression, resulted in his acquittal on all charges. These acquittals are considered a landmark in the history of the free press in England.

Good condition. Light check marks throughout that do not obscure text. Chipping to the cloth material of the spine crown and heel. Solid book with shelf wear.
