Alfred Emanuel "Al" Smith (1873–1944) was an influential American politician, best known as a four-term Governor of New York and the Democratic Party's presidential nominee in 1928, running against Herbert Hoover.
He was a prominent figure of the Progressive Era, a champion of the urban working class, and the first Roman Catholic to be nominated for president by a major political party.
