Robley Dunglison Evans (1846-1912), famously known as "Fighting Bob," was a distinguished Rear Admiral in the United States Navy whose career spanned pivotal periods in American history. He earned his nickname for his bravery and resolute leadership displaying gallantry while severely wounded during the Civil War's Second Battle of Fort Fisher. His decisive handling of a diplomatic crisis with Chile in the early 1890s further solidified his reputation. During the Spanish-American War, he commanded the battleship USS Iowa at the Battle of Santiago de Cuba. Evans's most iconic command came in 1907 when he led the Atlantic leg of President Theodore Roosevelt's Great White Fleet on its historic circumnavigation of the globe. Ill health led to his retirement in 1908.
