Gould and Lincoln, 1858. First American edition leather bound hardcover of The Cruise of the Betsey; or, A Summer Ramble Among the Fossiliferous Deposits of the Hebrides with Rambles of a Geologist; or, Ten Thousand Miles Over the Fossiliferous Deposits of Scotland by Hugh Miller.
This work was published posthumously after the author's death.
The Christian Scottish geologist Hugh Miller (1802–1856) was one of the most influential figures in Victorian science and religious thought, despite his limited formal education. Miller became an expert on the Devonian rock formations of Scotland, especially its fossilized fish. In the era before Darwin's Origin of the Species, Miller argued that evidence from geology pointed to intelligent design.
