Harper & Brothers, 1954. Ex-library hardcover edition of The Wheel on the School by Heindert DeJong, illustrated by Maurice Sendak.

This appears to be a first edition library binding published in 1954, prior to winning the Newberry Medal in 1955. In my research, I could not find any examples of this edition with a dust jacket. I suspect it did not come with one as the covers are nicely decorated. The scarce other examples I could find with this cover were all ex-library with no dust jacket as well.

Poor condition. This book is structurally sound with a very firm, square binding and crisp pages, but major flaws as follows. The page block edges seem worn with a bumpy, smooth texture. Hard to tell if this was as issued by design or by some abuse. The page block edges are also soiled. Covers soiled as well with notable scraping to the cloth at the bottom and wear to the top of the spine. Light pencil markings, and other ex-library markings to the book interior pages and cover interiors. Acceptable as a reading copy or a structurally sound collectible edition of a scarce hardcover.
