Elkin Mathews & Marrot, 1931. First edition hardcover of Dinner with James by Rose Henniker-Heaton. 244 pages. Printed and bound in Great Britain. Colored covers oddly reminiscent of a Grateful Dead tie-dye shirt.
A fictional philosophical dialogue of "sundry reflections on the vanity of human nature" through dinners with Sir James Montgomerie.
There is a storyline here. The characters seem to jaunt about Europe and enjoy the benefits of higher society. It begins:
"Freddy's letter was as usual full of family news. It ended up 'You might dine with poor old James one night, he seems very down on his luck.'
"I replied 'James is a greedy selfish old man and I would not dine with him if I were paid for it.' --but on second thoughts I crossed out the word 'if' and substituted 'unless.'"
Good condition. Some wear to the covers especially at the corners. Interior pages foxed but crisp. A solid book with shelf wear.
