H.J. Smith & Co., 1889. Antiquarian first edition cloth bound hardcover of The Johnstown Horror!!! or Valley of Death, Being A Complete and Thrilling Account of the Awful Floods and Their Appalling Ruin by James Herbert Walker.

Documents the catastrophic 1889 dam failure and deluge that leveled the Pennsylvania industrial hub Johnstown.

Triggered by a massive storm, the 1889 Johnstown Flood unleashed 20 million tons of water and killed over 2,200 people. The catastrophe was blamed on the elite South Fork Fishing and Hunting Club whose wealthy members had poorly modified the dam and removed its essential drainage systems. In the aftermath, Clara Barton led the American Red Cross in its first major peacetime relief effort.

Good condition. Covers worn especially to the edges and corners. Binding okay. Appears to be missing a half-title page. Previous owner's writing inside the cover, to the dedication page, and one marking found to the Preface section. Solid book with shelf wear.
