The University of North Carolina Press, 1937. Signed first edition cloth bound illustrated hardcover of Seed From Madagascar by Duncan Clinch Heyward with black and white photo plates by Carl Julien throughout.

The author has signed the half title page.

History of the southeastern rice industry written by the great-grandson of its largest plantation landowner in South Carolina, Nathaniel Heyward. Tinged with sadness at the loss of this once great industry and his family's legacy with it, the author wishes to tell the story warts and all. He particularly addresses slavery on the rice plantations.

Good condition. Title page is coming slightly loose at the top of its binding but is still firmly attached. Soiling to the cloth covers. Light stain to the spine. Previous owners markings inside the front and back covers. Binding square and tight. Interior pages crisp. A solid book with shelf wear.
