Harper & Row, 1977. Publisher's promotional review copy of American Hunger by Richard Wright. This first edition was sent to the press in advance of the publication date to solicit reviews to help promote the book.

The accompanying 3-page letter explains the origins of the work, which was to be the first of six unpublished Richard Wright books being posthumously released by Harper & Row.

American Hunger is the second half of Wright's famous autobiography Black Boy, which was originally to be published in a single volume. As the letter explains, Wright was convinced by his publisher to end Black Boy with his departure from the South and to publish the second part as a separate book. However, Wright changed his mind, and thought much of the material too sensitive to be published at the time, so it remained in his estate when he died in 1960.

This package also includes a glossy black and white photo of Wright and a yellow slip soliciting reviews.

Good condition. Dust jacket acceptable with a 2-inch tear to the front cover flap crease and creasing originating from the tear. Book is in good condition. Faint spotting to the top of the page block. Binding solid, nice covers, and interior pages clean and crisp.
