Cordelia White Phifer, 1920. Full black and white photocopy of a handwritten book created by Cordelia White Phifer titled The Five White Brothers in the Confederate Army. The book is a compilation of letters her five uncles wrote during their service in the Confederate army to family members -- mostly to Cordelia's motherĀ Mary Martha (White) Phifer. The book includes photos of its subjects and some illustrations by the author.
The White family hails from Fort Mill, South Carolina. Their ancestral White Homestead is a historical site known to have hosted the last meeting of the Confederate Cabinet.
Miss Phifer only made one copy of her book as a gift to the Museum of the Confederacy in 1920. Today, the handmade book is stored in the collections of The Virginia Museum of History and Culture, formerly known as the Museum of the Confederacy.
This staple-bound packet includes a full photocopy of the book, a genealogical tree of the White Family, a Charlotte Observer article from 1920 on the occasion of Miss Phifer presenting her manuscript, and a cover letter from the archivist of the White Homestead, who was probably the creator of the packet.
Good condition. The photocopy has occasional minor contrast issues making words difficult but not impossible to make out. An overall readable copy of a rare book with an interesting history.
